About Us

An artist-run gallery incorporated in 1982, Kingston takes its name from its original location on Kingston Street in Chinatown. In the mid-90s the gallery was one of the very first to relocate to Thayer Street, anchoring what has since developed into the vibrant SoWa arts district of Boston's historic South End.

The gallery is governed and run by dues-paying, exhibiting artist-members and showcases a diverse range of contemporary art in a mutually supportive environment that encourages experimentation and growth. 100% of the income from sales of artwork in the gallery benefits artists. Our current roster of artists includes: Sophia Ainslie, Susan Alport, Ilona Anderson, Joan Baldwin, Judy Brown, Linda Leslie Brown, Mary Bucci McCoy, Gail Erwin, Janet Hansen Kawada, Mary Lang, Catelin Mathers-Suter, Karen Meninno, Barbara Moody, Jennifer Moses, Rose Olson, Sharon Pierce, Susan Scott, Elif Soyer, Ann Wessmann, Luanne Witkowski. Gallery exhibitions receive attention in both print and online publications including Art in America, Art New England, ArtScope, Boston Globe, Boston Herald, The Weekly Dig, ArtCritical.com, and Time Out Boston.

The gallery space is divided front to back into the Main, Center and Members’ galleries. Occasionally at the discretion of the gallery artists the Center Gallery space is offered to a non-member artist interested in mounting a month-long show to coincide with exhibitions in the Main gallery.

Associate Membership is a new category of membership for the Kingston Gallery. This invitational group was selected by the membership to expand the Gallery's contact with artists and to encourage new art in our community. The Associate Members will have their own group show in August, 2011.

Membership
Since its inception nearly thirty years ago, Kingston Gallery has empowered its artist-members through opportunities to exhibit work, join a community of fellow artists, and participate directly in the gallery's operation.

In addition to a solo show every two years in the Main gallery and a solo show in the Members’ gallery in alternate years, members have the opportunity to participate in at least one group show every year.

Membership responsibilities are minimal and include attendance at monthly meetings, staffing the gallery once or twice per month, and $90 per month dues. (A one-time commitment fee of $200 is payable upon acceptance as a member.)

Kingston periodically has openings for new members, and we welcome artists living and working in Greater Boston to apply for membership. Membership is quite competitive, with new artist-members being selected by a majority vote. Images of applicants’ work are reviewed and voted on at the gallery’s monthly meetings by all members.

To apply, please submit the following:

  • Name/Address/Telephone/E-mail
  • 10-20 jpegs (or slides), numbered to correspond with…
  • sheet listing title, media, dimensions and date completed for each work
  • resume
  • artist’s statement
  • self-addressed, stamped envelope for return of slides

Send it to:
